The 21st annual Merchant Navy Memorial Service was held Thursday at the Merchant Navy Memorial on the grounds of the Marine Institute.

The event is held by the Canadian Merchant Navy Veterans Association, in conjunction with the Company of Master Mariners – NL Division and the Marine Institute.

During the Second World War, more than 333 Newfoundland merchant seamen, including one woman, lost their lives.

Canada lost more than 70 ships and 2,000 Merchant Navy personnel, including eight female radio officers and stewardesses.
