Passersby called 911 when they noticed flames and smoke coming from the back of the home just before 4 a.m. When firefighters from the St. John’s Regional fire department arrived on scene, they quickly deployed attack lines to the rear of the house as well as from inside and knocked the fire down.
In the meantime, some of the residents-one of them a child- and their dog took shelter in the rear of an Eastern Health ambulance. Platoon chief Brian Tucker said the fire was confined mostly to a room at the rear of the house but the upper floor of the home did suffer smoke damage.
Firefighters were also still searching for a family cat that went missing during the incident.
