The Hungry Heart Café, part of the Stella’s Circle social enterprise organization initiative, in conjunction with its 10th anniversary celebrations, is hosting a scone flavour contest.

“People talk about our scones. They are the building block of what we do,” said Carolyn Power, executive chef at the Hungry Heart Café.

“We are known for our scones, so we decided to have a bit of fun and let people contribute ideas to create a scone from it that we will feature here at the Hungry Heart.”
Power said some of the ideas bantered around include pear and ginger, banana and nut, and mango and mint. The recipe can be adapted to any number of ingredients, and the staff looks forward to seeing what the public provides.

“People have up to the 20th (of April) to submit, and starting on April 23, we will begin making the scones,” Power said.

“It will be a feature item on that day. We like the idea of it, as people get to share their ideas with us.

“It will be fun to see how well it works.”

Scones currently offered at the Hungry Heart Café include blueberry, partridgeberry, cranberry apple, cherry chocolate chip, strawberry and cheese.

The Hungry Heart Café is a flagship social enterprise in St. John’s and helps people with barriers to employment receive employment training.

The cafe is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
