Hazardous road conditions in the St. John’s area this morning resulted in this collision in which the vehicle hit a retaining wall near the Quality Hotel on the corner of Water Street and Hill O'Chips in downtown St. John's. A mixture of snow, ice pellets and freezing rain has resulted in messy, slippery streets. The vehicle was removed from the hill just before the noon hour by workers from Tulk Towing.
According to Environment Canada, a freezing rain warning remains in effect for St. John’s and vicinity.
A mix of ice pellets, snow and freezing rain is expected to change over to freezing rain by early this afternoon. Most areas should receive several hours of freezing rain before precipitation tapers off late this afternoon.
For the Northern Avalon, significant freezing rain is expected to be mainly over southern sections, including Whitbourne to Bay Roberts and southeastward to Conception Bay South.
Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas.
