Inmate dies suddenly at HMP in St. John’s

An inmate at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary died suddenly early Thursday, the Department of Justice and Public Safety has confirmed.

“Early August 31, Her Majesty’s Penitentiary experienced the sudden death of a male inmate. This matter is now under investigation by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary,” an email from a department spokeswoman reads.

The RNC told The Telegram officers responded to the Health Science Centre just before 2 a.m. Thursday after the incident was reported to police.

The RNC, HMP and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are working together on the matter.
