Mark Rumbolt was back in provincial court in St. John’s for the start of the inquiry, which determines if there’s enough evidence to send the case to trial. It’s expected to last four days, with about 20 witnesses expected to take the stand.

Rumbolt is not in custody, having been released on conditions shortly after his arrest in November of last year.

Rumbolt is represented by Jeff Brace. Jessica Gallant is the Crown prosecutor.

Police arrested the 57-year-old Rumbolt on Nov. 22, 2016, claiming he attempted to murder the woman he was with back in January of that year.

According to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary’s major crimes unit, charges were laid after officers received results from laboratory testing of forensic evidence from a west-end home in the capital city.

On Jan. 22, 2016, paramedics were called to the home. Rumbolt and the woman were both taken from there to the hospital. RNC officers were called to the hospital a short time later.

According to the police, it was reported to police Rumboldt had attempted to administer a “noxious thing” to the woman — prescription pills. It’s not known what the medication was or who owned it.

Rumbolt is charged with attempted murder and administering a noxious thing (also a charge under the criminal code).
