After raising a large sum of money, Jesse Renouf proudly took part in a Bay St. George Special Olympics Torch Relay on Friday, saying the best part is that it is used locally.

About 40 people marched in the torch relay that had the start and finish point at the Bay St. George YMCA.

Renouf started with the Special Olympics program in 2015, something that he’s been enjoying since and is looking forward to competing in the Special Olympics Newfoundland & Labrador Provincial Games being hosted in Stephenville this summer.

He will be competing in running, shotput, long jump and javelin.

Leading up to the relay, Jesse and his mom Judy Renouf went door to door in Port au Port, Kippens and Stephenville, raising $1,338 for the relay.

Donald Kendall, another Special Olympian, also had a lot of success with the fundraiser, bringing in $1,882 towards a total that’s expected to hit $7,000.

In addition to his Special Olympics involvements, Renouf likes exercising, golfing, baseball and other types of games.

Joining Special Olympics athletes in the relay were RCMP members, corrections staff and YMCA staff members.
