Around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Corner Brook RCMP received a call from a Frenchman’s Cove resident informing them of a kayaker in apparent distress and in the water.

The RCMP, supported by the Canadian Coast Guard and members of the Bay of Islands Search and Rescue, conducted an extensive sea and shoreline search for the man, the RCMP said in a news release Tuesday.

The kayaker, a 31-year-old man from Steady Brook, was located three hours later in the water near the community of McIver’s. He was flown to Western Memorial Hospital in Corner Brook suffering from minor injuries and hypothermia.

The RCMP said recreational boaters should monitor the weather for changes prior to embarking on any trip and inform family or friends of their travel plans, where they are going and when they plan to return.

The RCMP said caller was instrumental in saving the man’s life.
