Vatcher was killed and her son, Chris, was injured in a terrorist attack in Karak, Jordan, last Sunday.

She lived in Corner Brook, but was originally from Burgeo on Newfoundland’s southwest coast. Her mother still lives there and family members have converged on the town as they collectively cope with their grief.

The town’s flag has been flying at half-mast in Vatcher’s memory, as it has also been flying in Corner Brook. There was also a moment of silence held for her at a community event held in Burgeo earlier this week.

The family has not spoken to the media yet, but Burgeo Mayor Barbara Barter has been in contact with them. She said they are going through the formalities of arranging to have Vatcher’s body returned to Canada. According to the mayor, Chris Vatcher is expected to be released from hospital, if he has not already been, and sources have indicated he should fully recover from his wounds.

“There’s not much else we can do here now as a town, other than let them be as they do what they need to do,” Barter said.

In the meantime, a page set up on the GoFundMe fundraising website in support of the family has easily surpassed its initial goal of $40,000. As of press time Thursday, that effort organized by a family friend had reached nearly $52,000.
