Man wanted for armed robbery is now in custody

William Whalen, who was wanted for armed robbery, was arrested Saturday, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has confirmed.

Whalen was also wanted for possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and breach of court orders.

A warrant was issued for Whalen’s arrest Friday in connection with an armed robbery earlier in the week at City Superette on Pleasant Street. According to a news release from the RNC, officers responded to a call about the incident Monday at 11:20 p.m. The armed suspect — now identified by the RNC as Whalen — demanded money and cigarettes, and got away with both before police arrived.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

Whalen is expected to appear in court Sunday morning.
