The charge of attempted murder is expected to be dropped against Justin Michael Jordan.
Jordan appeared in provincial court in St. John’s today (Monday) via video link from Her Majesty’s Penitentiary (HMP).
His lawyer Michael Ralph told Judge Mike Madden that they are entering guilty pleas to the two lesser charges.
Crown prosecutor Jason House said the attempted murder charge will be conditionally withdrawn at the next court date.
Jordan’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for Nov. 20 at 2 p.m.
He will also settle his other unrelated charges — setting of a fire alarm and assaulting another inmate — at that time.
Jordan, 25, was said to have stabbed Butt several times with a shank while they were in the outside recreation area at HMP on June 8.
Butt’s shirt was said to have been soaked with blood and he was immediately treated by HMP medical staff. He hasn’t had any medical issues since and is recovering, sources say.
Butt made headlines last year when he allegedly killed his young daughter. He has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and arson in relation to the death of his daughter, Quinn, who was five years old. Butt and Quinn were found inside his burning home on Hayden Heights in Carbonear on April 24, 2016.
Butt's six-week trial is scheduled to begin March 26 at Newfoundland Supreme Court.
