ST. JOHN'S, NL - The Newfoundland and Labrador Regional MATE 2018 Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Competition will see 30 teams of junior high and high schools students convene at the Fisheries and Marine Institute in St. John’s this Friday and Saturday, May 4-5.
Each team has designed and built their own ROV for the competition, which they will use to complete specific tasks in the Marine Institute’s flume tank.
Teams will try to locate the wreckage of a vintage airplane and recover its engine, install or recover a seismometer, and install a tidal turbine and environmental monitoring instrumentation.
The Newfoundland and Labrador MATE competition is part of a network of 30 regional events worldwide.
The top two teams from the high school competition will advance to the 2018 MATE International ROV Competition being held from June 21-23 at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wa.
