Firefighters were dispatched shortly after 6 p.m. when a neighbour saw fire coming from the home and alerted 911.
Fire Chief Alex Coady said the call came in at 5:50 p.m., and the department responded with Engine 3 and Rescue 4. A ladder truck and Engine 2 were brought in later.
Due to the distance of the home from a water supply, two pumper trucks were required, “one to fight the fire, and one to supply water because of the distance from the fire hydrant,” said Coady.
One person was in the home when the fire broke out, as well as the family’s two dogs and a cat. All made it safely out of the home.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, the back step of the residence and the back area of the porch were engulfed in flame.
“The fire was already in the attic space, because smoke was coming from all around the eaves at that time,” said Coady.
Crews entered the residence to battle the fire from inside the home, but were pulled back for safety reasons, he said.
“Because of the amount of fire in the roof, we were concerned for the firefighter’s safety so we didn’t stay in - we came out and took up a defensive position.”
Crews battled the fire for more than three hours before extinguishing the flames, but were later called back to the structure because of a flare up.
“There was a small fire starting in the roof section that had collapsed into the house,” said Coady. “That could have been something that was hidden, just hot embers … and with the wind conditions it got a bit of air and reignited.”
Coady said he would like to thank town residents for their help, as well as those who dropped of coffee and Gatorade to the firefighters.
Details about cause of the fire are not known.
