According to the release, there are 1,315 doctors practicing in the province in 2016, an increase of 2.6 per cent from the previous year. This trend shows a steady increase of 6.7 per cent from 2012-16. This province has 248 doctors per population of 100,000 in 2016.
Paying doctors through 2015-16 remained at $386 million, identical to the previous fiscal year. Each physician in the province averages a salary of $276,000, down $1,000 from the previous year.
The CIHI report said that for the 10th straight year the number of doctors in Canada increased, more than the population grew. The total physician payments reached an all-time high, while the average gross payment increased by less than one per cent from the year before.
Newfoundland and Labrador was second nationally in the area of internationally trained physicians in its workforce with 36.6 per cent. The number of female doctors in the province is 37.3 per cent.
