N.L. Egg slogan and contest is no yoke

The new logo, “Laid Right Here” by Newfoundland Eggs Inc. is causing a bit of a stir on social media.

It’s a slogan that will surely crack a smile across the most hardened of faces. And if it still doesn’t bring you out of your shell, the online contest that accompanies the launch of Newfoundland Eggs Inc.’s “Laid Right Here” campaign surely will.

The new slogan has already set social media sites into a hard boil and, in stores where the new packaging has already shown up, shoppers have been scrambling for a second look.

And there’s more pun to have with this.

That’s whole idea, according to the CEO of Newfoundland Eggs Inc., Joey Smallwood.

Smallwood, the great-grandson of the famous former Newfoundland premier Joseph R. (Joey) Smallwood, says they wanted to find a way to get people talking about locally produced eggs, and to give the company a good online and social media presence, something it didn’t previously have.

A news release notes: “In keeping with our sense of provincial pride and sense of humour, the new slogan ‘Laid Right Here’ is a nod to (the province’s) ‘Made Right Here,’ and promotes our locally produced, quality eggs while prompting a little chuckle.”

Smallwood said the company hired a marketing firm to help with the re-branding launch. He said it was his brother Philip who had come up with the slogan some years ago, but it was only now they decided to push ahead with it.

“We are farmers, not marketing experts, so when we suggested this to the marketing company they thought it was a good idea and did their thing with it,” he said.

“We want to focus on that it is a local product, that consumers have a choice to buy locally produced eggs and that it supports the local economy and local jobs.”

The new logo includes a smiley-face sun named Sonny which has become the new face of Newfoundland Eggs Inc. and the online presence.

The contest provides customers the opportunity to win a set of new kitchen appliances valued at over $5,600. To enter the contest, go to www.laidrighthere.ca.

Secondary prizes of five Paderno Cookware sets (valued at approximately $600 each) will be drawn from entrants online and followers of the Facebook page throughout the contest. Entries will be accepted up to May 31, and the grand prize draw will take place on June 1.

Newfoundland Eggs Inc. on Roaches Line is a family-owned business dating back four generations. Joseph R. Smallwood and a son-in-law started the farm in the 1950s.

The company has about 20-25 employees and also takes part in a school program where it visits schools and provides egg sandwiches to students.

Today, the company’s products are distributed island-wide over easy routes and sunny side up locations.
