On the Trail of the Caribou

Chosen through a poetry and essay contest, about 35 local youth embarked on a week-long journey late Wednesday night, leaving from St. John’s International Airport on a flight to London, England, bound for Beaumont-Hamel, France, on the 101th anniversary of the tragic advance of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment on July 1, 1916, in the First World War.

Among the students attending are army cadet CWO Francis Finlayson, 18, (left) of Harbour Grace, a member of the 2615 Victoria Army Cadets, and St. Kevin’s High School student Olivia Noseworthy, 18, of Goulds. They chatted with Sullivan (right) before departing for the airport from the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 56, in Pleasantville on Wednesday night.
