OTTERBURY, NL — Two local fire departments responded to a house fire in Otterbury Wednesday morning, Feb. 14.
The Bay Roberts Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call for aid from the Bay de Grave Volunteer Fire Department at around 5:30 a.m. regarding an older home located in Otterbury that had caught fire. The unoccupied building was empty, with no power supply, as the homeowners are believed to live out of province.
Newly elected chief of the Bay Roberts brigade, Rick Edmunds, told The Compass that both crews were waiting on scene this morning at around 10:30, awaiting an excavator to arrive and destroy the dilapidated remains of the home in hopes of shutting out any chance of the flames picking back up later in the day.
The location proved to be a slight issue for firefighters responding to the call, as there was no water supply in the area. As a result, both brigades made use of two of their water pumpers to douse the flames, resulting in four trucks being on the scene.
While the majority of the fire has been dealt with, Edmunds said they will remain on scene for a while longer to ensure all is safe.
