Protest over hiring at Canada Fluorspar mining project in St. Lawrence

A protest is underway at Canada Fluorspar Inc.’s mining project in St. Lawrence this morning.

The demonstration apparently has to do with promises the company made about hiring locally.

Access to the mine has been blocked since 6 a.m.

Trucks block another access route to Canada Fluorspar’s operation in St. Lawrence.

It comes on the heels of a post on Facebook yesterday that stirred up a lot of debate on the subject.

There have been over 100 comments reacting to St. Lawrence resident Troy Beck’s post.

Beck said everyday there’s talk of more and more people from outside the town being hired.

The issue was also raised at St. Lawrence council recently.

“Back in the last year, myself and many residents here gathered for a town meeting on the opening of mine,” Beck wrote. “From that meeting we all got a lot of promises that we all believed and so far the majority of us and the town in general has been let down.”

TC Media has a reporter on the scene and will be posting more about the demonstration later.
