Province releases sunshine list

The provincial government released it’s own sunshine list of employees who receive over $100,000 a year in compensation.

There is one list for all core government departments and central agencies, and separate lists for agencies, boards, commissions, health care bodies, educational bodies and Crown corporations.

Nalcor Energy and its subsidiaries and Memorial University, for instance, have 778 and 1,064 people making more than $100,000 annually. The Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women, the Student Loan Corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador and the provincial library board each have one person over $100K.

The Telegram compiled its own sunshine list last April through Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Individuals on government's list are identified by their name, job title, department or public body in which they are employed. The total compensation figure is a broken down to include base salary, overtime, premiums, retroactive pay, bonuses, other compensation, as well as severance where applicable.

Forty-three employees were granted exemption from disclosure after it was deemed it could threaten their safety or mental or physical health.

With the exception of its ranking officers, Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officers were granted name exemption only.

“The Provincial Government spends approximately $3.3 billion annually on employee salaries and benefits amounting to 40 per cent of total expenses of $8.5 billion,” Cathy Bennett, minister of finance and president of the treasury board stated in a release from government .

“It stands to reason that this information should be available to the public as it is important for the people of the province to have access to information about government spending in an open and transparent way.”
