Quick actions helped save soccer player

During a ceremony at the Canadian Red Cross provincial headquarters on Major’s Path in St. John’s on Tuesday morning, Conception Bay South residents Gerry Stead and Alana Langdon were presented with Rescuer Awards for their life-saving actions stemming from an incident at the Topsail artificial turf soccer pitch on the night of Sept. 25, 2014.

An 11-year-old soccer player (whose name is withheld due to a court-imposed publication ban) was attacked by a bystander and stabbed while participating in the Conception Bay South Soccer Association’s fall skills camp. Stead, a safety specialist with 3M Canada, and Langdon, a community health nurse, immediately stepped into action and provided first-aid and CPR until paramedics arrived. The victim required several surgeries over the past 16 months and has fully recovered, and has resumed playing soccer.
