Chernitsky, his wife and their three young children moved to St. John’s in February.

“Our mandate is to find places where the Jewish community needs a boost in their infrastructure,” Chernitsky said. “That was noticed in St. John’s, so we decided to come.”

Chernitsky is of the recently established Chabad of Newfoundland, and the region’s only Hasidic rabbi.

Chernitsky told The Telegram that he and his family have had a warm welcome in St. John’s, and are looking for ways to give back to the community.

“I can certainly relate to the joy that toys bring to children,” said Chernitsky.

“Religion is a culture of helping others and, at this difficult time in the world, we are looking to dispel darkness with light.”
