The Royal Canadian Mounted Police detachment in Corner Brook is currently undergoing renovations that will extend the life of the 53-year-old building.

Don Currie, manager of real property with the RCMP B Division in Newfoundland and Labrador, said the force is doing some general improvements to the building that was built on Mount Bernard Avenue in 1965.

That includes changing flooring, walls, wallpaper, painting and upgrades to the electrical and mechanical systems.

“Just a general mid-life upgrade,” he said.

The work started last year and will continue for the next two years.

The bulk of the work to be carried out this year is happening inside the building and the cost of this phase of the renovation is $749,000.

The work that will be completed next year will include some changes to windows and doors in the building that will increase energy efficiency.

“What we try to do is spruce it up, make it better for the employees and to make it more functional because as time changes requirements change for everything,” said Currie.

“We try to modernize it and keep it up to our standards.”

When it’s all done the total cost of the work will be between $800,000 and $900,000.
