One man is lucky to be alive Sunday night after his car struck a moose on the Southern Shore highway just south of Bay Bulls-Big Pond.

That assessment came from an official on the collision scene who pointed out that the roof of the man’s car was peeled back all the way to the back-seat area of his vehicle. The victim was taken to hospital with minor injuries and was the car's only occupant.

The injured animal ran off into nearby woods and could not be located.

Traffic was stopped in both directions as police and firefighters dealt with the scene.
