St. John’s city council voted 8-3 Monday to approve a home project put forward by Craig and Lisa Dobbin.

The 6,780-square-foot home was designed by Philip Pratt, the designer of The Rooms.

Despite concerns from the NL Historic Trust and recommendations from council’s Built Heritage Experts Panel against the proposal, council voted to go ahead with the project. Councillors Ian Froude, Hope Jamieson, and Maggie Burton were the dissenters.

In a statement, the Dobbins said they’re pleased their new home has been approved.

“The home was designed with careful consideration and sensitivity to both the neighbours and to the context of its immediate surroundings. Although it is modern in style, careful use of form, materials and natural colours will ensure it blends into the natural surroundings and will be inherently inconspicuous,” reads the statement.

The Dobbins expect construction to begin in the spring, with no firm timetable for construction.
