St. John’s Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary will take a medical leave for the next three to six weeks after a “non-life-threatening surgery” on Thursday.

O’Leary was in high spirits on Monday, joking with councillors that she’ll finally get to take a break.

“It’s something that makes me nervous, but I know that I have to take this time,” she said.

Council will be down to 10 members in O’Leary’s absence. There will be no interim appointment.

Councillors who take medical leave are paid during their absence.
