Apparently banking on getting a licence to sell, a St. John’s store is offering free weed for a year in a customer-loyalty contest.

Mary Jane’s on Water Street would not comment on the contest.

But a sign in the window of the shop says anyone who makes a purchase will have their name entered in the contest.

The draw will take place on the eventual day pot is legalized.

The contest is being held at each of the Mary Jane’s Atlantic Canada stores — St. John’s, Sydney, N.S., Sackville, N.B., and Halifax.

According to the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corp. (NLC), although the full details about cannabis legalization have not been completed, the NLC expects licensed cannabis retailers will be held to the same or similar regulations as licensed beverage alcohol establishments.

“As these licensed beverage alcohol establishments are not permitted to give away product to customers for free, the same would be applied to licensed cannabis retailers,” the NLC said in a statement.

The request for proposals for licensed cannabis retailers has closed, and the NLC is evaluating each submission. Successful applicants will be notified in the coming weeks, and the public will be notified of planned store locations and details soon after, the NLC stated.

Meanwhile, another downtown store, The Puffin Hut, is staging “Weed Olympics” on Friday.

April 20, or 4/20, is known as “weed day,” with unofficial celebrations in various locations around the world.

Among The Puffin Hut’s planned activities, according to a utility pole poster advertising the event, are a triathlon — involving bong hit/vape bag/dab (potent butane hash oil) hit until one person is left standing — as well as a joint-rolling competition and a longest puff contest.

According to the poster, the competitors must supply their own product.

Bill C-45 to legalize marijuana in Canada is currently before the Senate.
