Christopher Michael Tucker appeared in provincial court in St. John’s this afternoon — a day after he was taken into custody.

Prosecutor Jennifer Colford told Judge Mike Madden the Crown is opposed to releasing Tucker from jail.

A bail hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday.

As Tucker was being led out of the courtroom, he cursed at this reporter outside the courtroom, saying, “You (effing) bitch!”

Tucker was arrested as a result of an incident that happened at 2:30 p.m. Thursday on the parking lot of Shoppers Drug Mart on LeMarchant Road.

Officers with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary’s patrol services division, criminal investigation division and forensic identification services responded to a report that there was a fight and that a man had been stabbed.

When they got there, the men believed to have been involved in the altercation were gone.

According to an RNC news release, witnesses described it as a violent assault. Officers saw blood on the ground and found the injured man a short time later. The 34-year-old was taken to hospital, where he remains, with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The RNC does not consider the stabbing a random act, since the accused and the victim knew each other.

Tucker has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon (a knife) and two counts of breaching court orders.

He also has several outstanding charges, including assault, theft, uttering threats and many counts of court breaches.
