HEART'S CONTENT, N.L. — Police are trying to find out what caused an SUV to catch fire while travelling along Route 74, the Heart's Content Barrens, on a stormy Monday morning.

It happened at 10:30 a.m., shortly before Harbour Grace RCMP received a report that a Ford Edge was on fire. Officers, along with volunteer firefighters from Victoria, Salmon Cove/Perry's Cove, Heart's Content and New Perlican, showed up to help.

Police said the driver noticed smoke coming from the heated passenger seat, pulled over to the side of the road and escaped without injury. The vehicle, which was engulfed in flames, was a total loss.

Road conditions at the time were poor, with whiteouts and reduced visibility, police said. The road was impassible while the fire was extinguished and the vehicle was removed.

The investigation into the fire continues.
