Graham Veitch, accused of killing his mother's partner a week before Christmas, is shown in a file photo from an earlier court appearance.

The 18-year-old was back in provincial court in St. John's this morning.

He held his head down as he sat in the prisoner's box in Courtroom No. 7.

Last week, Graham Veitch was sent for a second week-long psychiatric evaluation at the Waterford Hospital.

In court today, his co-counsel Mark Gruchy — who is handling the defence with Jason Edwards — told Judge Mark Pike that according to doctors at the Waterford Hospital, Veitch had been declared mentally fit. He said they are waiting to receive the police evidence package from the Crown.

Gruchy and prosecutor Shawn Patten agreed to set the case over to Jan. 30.

Veitch has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Dave Collins, 55, as well as a number of other charges: a charge of assaulting his mother with a hammer, a charge of assaulting his brother with a hammer, a charge of assaulting a police officer, a charge of theft and a charge of evading police.

According to the family, his mother and brother were not injured.

Members of the RNC, fire department and ambulance services were called to a home on Cadigan’s Road in Logy Bay around 7 p.m., Dec. 18 in response to a report of a serious assault with a weapon. Collins was taken to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Veitch allegedly stole Collins’ car and fled but was located by police shortly after 11p.m. in the Outer Cove area. Police say he rammed a marked police car and tried to drive around it, striking a second police car.
