Teen charged in St. John's high school threats released from jail

A St. John’s teenager charged in connection with reports of threats at two local high schools this spring has been released from custody.
Julio Ribeiro, 19, was released Monday after a bail review in Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court. The details of the hearing are subject to a publication ban.
Ribeiro had been in custody since he was arrested April 19, and his lawyer, Shelley Senior, had repeatedly expressed her concern with his incarceration. Senior told the court her client is significantly developmentally disabled and she was concerned for his well-being in prison.
Ribeiro is facing charges of uttering threats toward a specific male in relation to an alleged incident at Prince of Wales Collegiate in March, as well as charges of criminal harassment of a specific female, two charges of threats against a particular male and two charges of breaching court orders in connection to an alleged incident at Holy Heart High School a month later.
Ribeiro has pleaded not guilty to the earliest count of threats and guilty to one of the court order breaches, and Senior has previously said she has received an offer of a plea deal from the Crown. His trial will take place July 17.
