The 17-year-old driver involved in a fatal crash in St. John’s Friday was in court Wednesday. She is facing numerous charges in relation to the incident.

The charges were to be formally laid in court this afternoon.

The driver suffered serious injuries in the crash Friday that killed 19-year-old Alyssa Power. Two teen males who were also passengers in the car were also taken to hospital

Around 2 p.m, the young woman was in a wheelchair as she was escorted by police and sheriff’s officers from the lock-up to the RNC office at provincial court, injuries to her face clearly visible.

The young woman’s mother, upon seeing members of the media, shouted out to them “She’s my daughter. No one’s going near her. … She’s a youth.”

The crash occurred Friday night at around 10:30 p.m. in the Cowan Heights area of St. John’s at the intersection of Hamlyn Road and Canada Drive.

RNC said moments before the crash, a patrol officer travelling south on Hamlyn Road attempted to stop a Honda Accord, also headed south, in which Power was a passenger.

Police said the 17-year-old female driver did not stop for the traffic safety stop and, according to RNC Chief Joe Boland, “within seconds” collided with a west bound SUV travelling on Canada Drive.

There were four people in the Accord: the 17-year-old female driver, two teenaged boys, and Power.

The Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) was called in to do an independent investigation.

More details as they become available.
