Jigg’s dinner and fried bologna at The Big R Restaurant was a huge hit when celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain dropped in recently.

Bourdain, the star of “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown”, spent some time in Newfoundland in late September, fishing, hunting and dining.

Before heading off on his next adventure, he stopped in for a meal at The Big R on Harvey Road in St. John’s.

Bourdain, along with three friends, sat down on Sunday, Oct. 1 to enjoy a meal, while surrounded by a CNN film crew of about a dozen people.

“They gave us a little bit of notice that they were coming,” said Melissa Lee, an employee at the Big R. “But it was still exciting.”

Lee has been working at the Big R for seven years, and says nothing of this magnitude had been filmed at the restaurant before.

Bourdain enjoyed a meal listed on the menu as “Newfie Steak Dinner,” which is fried bologna.

His three friends ordered liver and onions, clam strips and chips and cod tongues.

The four split a Jigg’s dinner between them, and had a few Iceberg beers.

“Their plates were cleared off, so I think they enjoyed the meal,” Lee said with a laugh.

Lee told The Telegram that she and her coworkers are waiting to hear when the episode will air.

“I’m sure it will be really big news around the island when the episode date is released,” said Lee. “I know we’re really excited to watch it.”
