For sale, one aircraft hangar.

Well, that’s probably not what will be on the tender when the Town of Stephenville’s advertising goes out, but that’s exactly what it will amount to.

The building, a vintage aircraft hangar at 263 Carolina Avenue from the days the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base operated in Stephenville, is a large building with time and vandals taking its toll and a costly venture to clad over on the outside.

But for some type of lucrative industry it might be just what’s needed, as to erect the same type of building today would likely cost in the millions.

By all accounts it’s an eyesore right now and the Stephenville town council is hoping for some entity to purchase it. If that don’t happen, council hopes to have it torn down before the end of its four-year mandate in September of 2021.

Coun. Mark Felix, chairman of the town’s finance committee, said in the Request for Proposal tender there will be a stipulation that work has to be carried out on the building in a timely manner.

The building has had various uses since the closure of the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base back at the end of 1966, with some of those including: boat building, a cable production factory, the fabrication of pre-built homes for Venezuela, storage and the latest proposed venture was to use the facility for drying out peat moss.
