The Port aux Basques Volunteer Fire Department responded to a tractor-trailer fire around 8:30 pm last night.

The fire broke out around 8:30 p.m. Thursday evening.

Resident Ashley White, who captured striking photos of the flames, said she had passed by that area only 10 minutes earlier, but by the time she left the mall, the truck’s rear axle had become engulfed.

“It was quick and didn’t take long for the fire to grow,” said White, who first noticed the smoke and the rapidly growing crowd.

The Port aux Basques Fire Department responded quickly to douse the flames, but the extensive burns to the rear of the trailer and undercarriage necessitated its removal to a nearby tow yard.

There were no reports of injuries.

Black smoke was visible to motorists leaving Grand Bay and headed towards downtown.
Aided by the Port aux Basques RCMP, a local towing company prepared the damaged transport trailer for removal to a nearby facility about an hour after the fire broke out.
