The Flatrock fire was reported at about 2:30 a.m. by multiple callers and the home was fully engulfed when firefighters from the Torbay volunteer fire department arrived on scene. Chief Mike McGrath said the house was pretty well destroyed and must have been burning for a while before someone noticed the blaze.
He said the structure on Madeline’s Ridge was vacant and apparently under construction with only the outer shell completed. It also appeared to be for sale.
Both stations of the department responded to the blaze with two tanker trucks shuttling water to the scene to fight the blaze.
The second fire at about the same time gutted the Dirty Laundry laundromat on Freshwater Road.
When firefighters from the St. John’s Regional fire department arrived, platoon chief Robert Fowler said they found the business fully charged with smoke and flame. He said firefighters quickly entered the business and got the blaze knocked down very quickly and prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby attached businesses in the small strip mall.
The attached cell phone business and fast food restaurant did fill with smoke but did not appear to suffer any fire damage.
Three stations, Kenmount, Kent’s Pond and Central, responded to the call.
Both fires are under investigation and there were no injuries.
