Two treated for smoke inhalation after appliance overheats at St. John's retirement home

Two staff members of Kenny’s Pond Retirement Village were treated for smoke inhalation Thursday night following an incident with an electrical appliance.

An electric fan in one of the units in the building severely overheated and started smoking, filling the room with smoke in the process.

Residents were moved from the area and the two staff members used a fire extinguisher to prevent the incident from worsening but both inhaled smoke from the incident.

The two were taken from the scene by Eastern Health paramedics.

Firefighters from the St. John’s Regional fire department used a large electric fan to vent smoke from the room and no residents were injured.

The injuries to the two staff were not considered serious.
