Just after 12:30 am, officers with patrol services division, criminal investigation division, forensic identification services and police dog services responded to a home on the west-end street.
The 45-year-old man who was stabbed was transported to hospital prior to emergency responders arriving and remains there at this time in serious, but stable condition, police say.
The suspect — a 24-year-old St. John's man — was located a short time later in an apartment unit on Anspatch Street.
The Telegram has learned his name is Justin Jordan and he is scheduled to appear in provincial court this afternoon on charges of assault with a weapon, mischief (property damage), uttering threats and breaching conditions of a probation order.
Police say the man barricaded himself inside of the apartment stating he was armed. An incident command was established and included the tactics and rescue unit and negotiators.
Some residents in adjacent units were asked to temporarily vacate their apartments for their safety.
Shortly after 3:30 a.m, the man surrendered himself to police and was arrested without incident, police say.
Police have re-iterated the incident was not random in nature — both the accused and the victim were known to one another.
