Clarenville, N.L. —The RCMP are not releasing the names of a 75-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman who were pronounced dead at the scene of a tragic two-vehicle head-on collision Thursday afternoon on Highway 230 near Georges Brook in the Clarenville area.
In a news release Friday morning the RCMP said that two others were taken to GB Cross Memorial Hospital with injuries. A child passenger was not injured but was transported to hospital for observation.
Roads were wet at the time of the crash and hydroplaning is believed to be a major contributing factor, the news release said.
RCMP collision analysts were the scene along with Fewer's Ambulance Service, Clarenville Fire Department and Lethbridge Fire Department.
Around 3 o’clock Thursday the RCMP advised the road near George's Brook was closed because of a motor vehicle crash. It was expected to be closed for about two hours.
The police investigation continues.
The RCMP thanked motorists who stopped to assist the injured parties prior to emergency responders’ arrival. Drivers were reminded to slow down in heavy rain and be vigilant for resting water on our highways.
