UPDATED: An early morning house fire on Baker Street Saturday damaged an east-end St. John’s home but the occupants, a man and a woman, and their pets escaped without injuries.

The fire was discovered when smoke alarms went off inside the structure on Baker Street just before 5 a.m. The two residents left the home with their two dogs and a cat and called 911.

When firefighters with the St. John’s Regional fire department arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from the side of the home. An attack line was deployed and firefighters were able to get the fire knocked down within minutes but not before the laundry room and nearby areas of the home were damaged by the blaze.

The entire house also suffered smoke damage.

Disaster volunteers with the Canadian Red Cross are assisting the couple with emergency lodging, food and clothing purchases while they await a damage assessment and help through insurers.
