Victim of Labrador West homicide identified

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has identified the victim of a homicide that happened in Labrador City on Thursday, April 26.

Investigators have been in Labrador City since Thursday and have positively identified the victim of the killing as 28-year-old Vincent Belanger Dompierre of Montreal, QC.

Police say they have no idea how long Dompierre was in the Labrador City area, but investigators would like to speak with anyone who may have had contact or communication with the man in recent weeks.

Police also say Dompierre may have stood out to people because of his size and stature. He was 6 foot 6 and weighed 300 pounds.

An investigation team from St. John’s and Corner Brook are in Labrador West assisting with the investigation into the murder. They are also working with the office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.

Police have said that there was a firearm involved.

They also say it’s believed the victim and the accused were known to each other, and there is no concern for the public’s safety.

Thirty-year-old Vincent Ward was arrested April 26. He appeared in court that day and was charged with first-degree murder. He remains in custody and his next scheduled court appearance is May 7 at 1:30 p.m. in Wabush.
