High winds expected for many areas of the province

Environment Canada has issued a warning that strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring across Newfoundland, and will affect the St. Johns area.

Its currently about 13C in the metro area this morning at 7:30 a.m. and the morning will be mainly cloudy with drizzle and showers expected.

Very strong winds will stream across the Newfoundland today and tonight with the strongest swath of winds spreading from west to east across the island during the day said a statement issued early this morning.

South to southwesterly wind gusts of 100 km/h or more may reach the surface at times, especially over exposed inland areas and coastal area not protected by a cool marine layer.
The strongest winds can be expected over western areas of Newfoundland this morning, persisting until this evening in the southwest.

These winds will spread to eastern areas of the Island later this afternoon and continue throughout this evening.

Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.
