Southeastern Newfoundland is bracing for its first significant winter storm of the season this weekend, as a low-pressure system is approaching the island.
According to Environment Canada, a winter storm watch is in effect, with a low-pressure system tracking from the south on Saturday, expected to pass east of the Avalon Peninsula in the evening.
Environment Canada is forecasting light snow beginning over the Burin Peninsula on Saturday morning, Dec. 16, spreading to the Clarenville and Bonavista Peninsula area by noon.
The snow is expected to become heavy at times continuing into Saturday night, totalling between 10 to 15 centimetres before tapering to flurries.
Accompanying the snow will be strong northerly winds resulting in reduced visibility and blowing snow, especially during the evening.
