The Town of Springdale and Indian River High’s Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) are holding a Pride Week June 4-8.

The announcement comes after a flurry of media attention this spring on the town, which twice denied a request from the alliance to paint a school-area crosswalk rainbow colours.

IN-DEPTH: A town divided — Springdale ponders the question of inclusion

The purpose of the week is to create a safe and inclusive Springdale that supports LGBTQ2+ persons, their friends, families and allies and showcase that support through activities and events, a news release stated.

Pride Week will begin Monday, June 4, at 6 p.m. with the signing of a proclamation and an official raising of the Rainbow Pride Flag at Springdale town hall and will be open to all members of the community.

The GSA and other community partners are planning activities throughout the week for all ages and interests, the news release noted. Further details will be announced as planning proceeds.

The partnership between the Town of Springdale and the alliance is the result of a dialogue on the issue of inclusion and both groups have been encouraged by those discussions, the release said.

“Together, we are committed to continuing respectful, informed conversations for the betterment of our entire community,” the release from the town and GSA said. “It is the intention of both groups to continue to build a sense of belonging, pride and inclusion in our community, while celebrating diversity, appreciating the contributions of all citizens, and making Springdale a stronger, more vibrant community.”

Events and details will be available on the Indian River High School calendar (www.irh.k12.nf.ca) and the Town of Springdale event calendar as planning proceeds.
