Over the weekend in St. John’s Brigadier-General Derek Macaulay, commander of the 5th Canadian Division provided training for many of the city’s military units.

Macaulay said there are plenty of opportunities for those interested in joining the reserves in NL.

“If there were 500 people who were interested and successful in the recruiting process, I could hire them right now,” said Macaulay.Macaulay

He said he hopes to inform the public about some of the benefits that come along with joining the reserves.

“If you are a part-time solder in good standing, you are eligible for $2,000 a year, for four years towards education,” said Macaulay. “We recognize how important education is for young Canadians.”

There are benefits for employers as well, he said.

“Many employers aren’t aware of the skills that we provide, which can be transferable to the workplace,” said Macaulay. “These are skills that they don’t have to spend any time or money on, but they will still benefit.”

As the Command 5th Canadian Division, Macaulay is responsible for both regular and Reserve Force Canadian Army units, throughout all four Atlantic Provinces.

He focuses on recruiting, training and making sure that all units are prepared for domestic and international operations for Canada.
