A massive fire destroyed a condominium which was under construction in Kilbride and forced the evacuation of some area residents early Monday morning. The fire was reported at about 2:30 a.m. and when firefighters arrived on scene on Bay Bulls Road just south of the Pitts Memorial turnoff to downtown St. John’s, the building was completely engulfed in flames. With flames shooting about twenty meters into the air, the fire was so large that the Telegram’s photographer could see it from Park Avenue in Mount Pearl, .

Platoon chief Brian Tucker said the displaced residents, some with pets, were moved for their own safety as flankers and smoke from the intense blaze were blowing toward some of their homes, with siding melting on the ones closer to the fire. Tucker said they used a high-volume attack during the incident which levelled the two-storey structure. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary blocked Bay Bulls Road in the area and also had patrol cars on Pitts Memorial Drive next to where the building was burning. Once the fire was brought under control, people were allowed to return to their homes. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
