The sexual assault trial of an Irishtown-Summerside man is on hold until late next month.

Melvin Laing, 58, is charged with eight offences, including two counts apiece of sexual assault and forcible confinement, along with single counts of administering a noxious substance to endanger a life or cause bodily harm, anal intercourse, assault with a weapon and uttering threats.

Two days were set for the trial this week, but legal arguments have caused a delay. The trial has now been set over until March 23 so the defence can argue an application to have access a medical document involving the victim.

Laing has been in custody for nearly all of the time since his arrest last spring.
