The Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project is one step closer to completion with news that prime contractor Astaldi has “substantially completed” work on the powerhouse and intakes structures.
“With construction on these critical components completed, we are now installing the four generating units in the powerhouse,” Muskrat Falls Generation project manager Scott O’Brien stated in a release.
“We are focused on delivering power to the people of the province from the Muskrat Falls generating plant in 2019.”
Astaldi started construction on the spillway, powerhouse and intake structures for the Muskrat Falls generation project in Janaury of 2014. Over 330,000 cubic metres of concrete were used and roughly 3,8000 metric tonnes of structural steel was installed for the intake and powerhouse.
More than 4,600 of Astaldi workers were Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, 600 of who were indigenous peoples.
“It’s thanks to the hard work and dedication of every worker that the spillway structure was completed last year and now this year, we have substantially completed the powerhouse and intake structures,” stated Don Delarosbil, Project Manager Astaldi.
Work continues on the assembly and installation of the four massive generating units in the powerhouse.
