CARBONEAR, NL – An overdue hunter was found safe and sound this morning.

According to the Harbour Grace RCMP, a 42-year-old man and his dog left to go hunting west of Carbonear Wednesday morning.

Preliminary searches conducted by family and friends after he didn’t return as expected failed to locate the man, and police were notified around 9:30 p.m. last night.

The Avalon North Wolverines Search and Rescue began searching the area early this morning. Fire and Emergency Services Newfoundland and Labrador were also brought in to provide air services.

The man and his dog were located and removed from the area via helicopter around 10:30 a.m.

Public reminder

The RCMP, meanwhile, is reminding reminding the public to be prepared as the temperature drops and terrain conditions change.

It’s a good idea to make sure your vehicle is in good working order.

Other good safety tips include bringing extra fuel, familiarizing yourself with the area you are travelling through and knowing the potential hazards, checking the weather forecast before heading out, and carrying emergency supplies and learning survival skills.

You should always inform someone of your travel plans, where you are going, and when you plan to return.

Carrying a satellite phone, cell phone or other means of communication is also wise. If you become disoriented, you should try to stay in the same area and not wander.
