DEER LAKE
A member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s Traffic Services West was injured during an altercation with man following a traffic stop on Friday.
The officer stopped a vehicle for speeding at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the area of Deer Lake Power on Trans-Canada Highway.
The stop resulted in the lone occupant of the vehicle, a 25-year-old man from Stephenville, being arrested for drug related offences.
The RCMP says an altercation took place whereby the man struck the officer.
Officers from the Deer Lake Detachment and Traffic Services responded to the incident.
The officer was taken by ambulance to Western Memorial Regional Hospital and treated for his injuries. He was released later in that evening.
The man was held in custody until a court appearance in provincial court in Corner Brook on Saturday. He’s been charged with assaulting a police officer causing bodily harm, resisting arrest, possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of marijuana.
He was released from custody on strict conditions and is next scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 6 at 1:30 p.m.
Police say the investigation is continuing.
