Early reports of reindeer in St. John's Wednesday night turned out to be a moose sighting.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary responded to a report of reindeer in St. John's Wednesday night.

Early reports of the animals led to speculation that two reindeer were in the area of Oxen Pond Road and Freshwater Road shortly before midnight, police say.

However, upon arrival, police identified the animals as moose. With the assistance of provincial conservation officers the moose were escorted to a wooded area without incident.
